Magnetism of 3d transition metal atoms on W(001): submonolayer films
نویسنده
چکیده
We have investigated random submonolayer films of 3d transition metals on W(001). The tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method combined with the coherent potential approximation was employed to calculate the electronic structure of the films. We have estimated local magnetic moments and the stability of different magnetic structures, namely the ferromagnetic order, the disordered local moments and the non-magnetic state, by comparing the total energies of the corresponding systems. It has been found that the magnetic moments of V and Cr decrease and eventually disappear with decreasing coverage. On the other hand, Fe retains approximately the same magnetic moment throughout the whole concentration range from a single impurity to the monolayer coverage. Mn is an intermediate case between Cr and Fe since it is non-magnetic at very low coverages and (ferro)magnetic otherwise.

3d Transition-metal Films on W(100): Effects of Alloying on Magnetism
A surprising magnetic behavior of 3d transition-metal monolayers on the (100) tungsten surface has been reported recently [Ferriani et al., 2005]. The tendency to ferromagnetic (V, Cr, Mn) vs. antiferromagnetic (Fe, Co) order in these layers differs significantly from the situation on many other substrates, e.g. on W(110), Cu(100) or Pd(100). The aim of our work is to explore further the proper...
متن کاملMagnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 3dtransition metal monolayers on Pt(001): a density-functional study.
We systematically investigate the effects of having Pt as a substrate and/or capping layer on the magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) of 3d transition metal (TMs; Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) monolayers (MLs) by using a first-principles calculationl method. We found that Fe and Co MLs are ferromagnetic (FM) on a Pt(001) surface, but Mn and Cr MLs are antiferromagnetic (AFM). The magnetic m...
متن کاملMagnetism of 3d transition-metal monolayers on Rh(100)
We employ the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method to report a systematic density-functional theory study of the magnetic properties of the 3d transition-metal (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) monolayers deposited on the Rh(100) substrate. We find that all monolayer films are magnetic. The size of the local magnetic moments across the transition-metal series follows Hund’s rule with...
متن کاملOrbital magnetism of transition-metal adatoms and clusters on the Ag and Au„001... surfaces
We present ab initio calculations of the orbital moments and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies for 3d , 4d , and 5d transition-metal adatoms and for some selected small clusters on the ~001! surfaces of Ag and Au. The calculations are based on the local density approximation of density functional theory and apply a fully relativistic Koringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green’s function method. Due to th...
متن کاملMagnetism of 3d transition metal atom on Au(110)-(1×2) and Au(111) surfaces
We calculate the magnetism of 3d transition-metal atoms on Au(110)-(1×2) and Au(111) surfaces based on the Density Functional Theory. Our results show that the surface relaxation enhances the orbital moments of left-end elements (Ti,V) and quenches the orbital moments of right-end elements (Fe,Co,Ni) on the Au(110)(1×2) surface. The middle elements (Cr,Mn) of the group have large spin moments o...
